Discipline

Kindergarten teachers at Canterbury Elementary School view discipline as  a part of the process of establishing a "community of learners". Our program is accredited by the National Association of Early Childhood Educators and follows their guidelines for developmentally appropriate practice. Accordingly, discipline is handled in a positive manner, emphasizing the idea that we are a family of learners and we need to treat each other with kindness and respect. Each year teachers work with students to create a set of classroom rules which are posted for the year. Teachers review the rules often. If conflicts arise, the teacher facilitates for students to talk to each other to resolve difficulties. Parents will be contacted at the discretion of the teacher if the need arises in a more serious situation or if the principal is involved.
